Dillon Amphitheater Lighting Technician

Job Overview: The Dillon Amphitheater Lighting Technician will design and implement theater lighting and special effects for concerts, performances, films, and various events at the Dillon Amphitheater.

Hours: This is a summer seasonal, full-time position with hours varying between 30 to 40 hours per week, beginning mid-May through early October. Must be available to work flexible shifts and days, including late nights and weekends.

Reports To: Venue and Events Manager

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist Venue and Events Manager and Events and Recreation Supervisor with day-to-day operations, prioritization, and problem solving for the efficient and effective delivery of Dillon Amphitheater programming.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the public, event attendees, coworkers, performers and partners at all times. This includes having professional interactions with customers, providing accurate information and having general knowledge of the Dillon Amphitheater and Town of Dillon events and happenings.
  • Assist with loading and unloading equipment, props, and materials from trucks. Assist with the set-up of equipment according to lighting plot, while ensuring safety requirements are met. Disassemble and pack away equipment after events.
  • Work closely with electricians and house technician on maintenance of video, sound, and light production. Ensure the system operations are functioning properly.
  • Maintain cleanliness of venue and stage area before, during and after an event. Ensure all work areas and facilities are clean and safe for performers, crew, guests and staff. This includes picking up, sorting, and moving trash and recycling; and cleaning up bathrooms, portable toilets, and other messes.
  • Train and educate lighting and events crew with stage lingo, equipment handling and assembly, and standard operating procedures.
  • Set up and strike lighting equipment.
  • Assemble lighting and filter equipment, as needed.
  • Position and plot lighting.
  • Pre-rig lighting and ensure all cables and wires are safely concealed.
  • Load automated color change systems.
  • Check the focusing of lighting at sound check.
  • Operate and maintain equipment during events.
  • Change lighting between shots, as necessary.
  • Program and operate lighting consoles.
  • Ensure all lighting equipment is in good, working order and carry out tests prior to the start of events. Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of lighting equipment.
  • Keep lighting equipment operating by following operating instructions: troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
  • Work and communicate clearly and professionally with the team, production manager, venue manager, promoter, production crews and performers to ensure a successful event.
  • Ensure the proper care and handling of all Dillon Amphitheater lighting equipment and rentals.
  • Attend pre-calls with bands and promoter to help ensure comprehensive understanding of lighting needs.
  • Supervise lighting crew and delegate daily assignments to ensure efficient execution of each event.
  • Administer and enforce company and departmental safety rules, operating procedures, policies, and regulations for employees and the general public.
  • Set and monitor quality and service standards for staff.
  • Work shifts required to meet the needs of the amphitheater schedule. This includes late nights/early mornings, weekends and holidays.
  • Duties may occasionally include other facility setup, maintenance and breakdown duties, ticket and ID checking, participant registration and check-in, bag checking, light security, parking and traffic control, assisting with concessions and merchandise sales, and assisting with other town events and recreation events.
  • Operate different types of vehicles, including pickup trucks, utility vehicles and trailers.
  • Assist with the purchase of supplies and equipment, as needed.
  • Adhere to venue safety standards.
  • Responsible for responding to, communicating, and documenting incidents and emergency situations, including, but not limited to: First Aid, severe weather, and missing child events.
  • Provide support to all facets of the events and recreation operations as assigned by supervisors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Activities:

  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to sun, heat, cold, dust, precipitation, fuel, grease, trash and other conditions and chemicals commonly found in an events and recreation environment.
  • Must be capable of operating a variety of equipment, hand and power tools. Must be capable of safely operating and maneuvering vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be comfortable with heights.

While performing the duties of this job, the individual regularly works in outside-weather conditions. The individual frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The individual occasionally works in high, precarious places. The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and may experience the risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to very loud. Must be able to work in a loud noise environment for extended periods of time. Must be able to wear a radio earpiece during shifts. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate a computer, lighting board, lighting rigs, various pieces of equipment, tools, and vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The individual frequently is required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The individual is also required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The individual must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, preferably unassisted, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used: Motorized vehicles and equipment, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone, computer, calculator, lighting board and systems, ladders, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams software, timekeeping and scheduling software, and printer/copy/fax machine.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Exceptional customer service skills required.
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience.
  • Self-motivated, innovative team player with supervisory experience, who can also work well individually.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have exceptional organizational skills.
  • Must have creative problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous and timely manner, both verbally and in writing, when dealing with Town of Dillon employees, citizens, guests, customers, participants and vendors.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, and other departments and agencies.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies calmly and efficiently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to function and make good decisions in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Valid driver license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Previous manual labor experience preferred.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull 50 pounds.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks and assignments and meet deadlines.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification are preferred. Training provided.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to speak and understand the English language proficiently.
  • Must have a flexible schedule and willingness to work days, nights, weekends, late hours and holidays.
